The most commonly used marine rotifers are Brachionus plicatilis (L-type) and Brachionus rotundiformis (S-type and SS-type). Aquatic Live Food supplies pure cultures of Brachionus plicatilis (L-type rotifers) with a typical body length of about 160 micron.
The rotifers (Rotifera, commonly called wheel animals) are made up of microscopic and near-microscopic pseudocoelomate animals. Most rotifers are around 0.1–0.5 mm long (although their size can range from 50 micron to over 2 mm). They are common in freshwater environments throughout the world with a few saltwater species.
Some rotifers are free swimming and truly planktonic, others move by inch-worming along a substrate. Some are immobile, living inside tubes or gelatinous hold-fasts that are attached to a substrate. About 25 species are colonial (e.g., Sinantherina semibullata), and are either immobile or planktonic.
