A micrometer (µm) is a unit of length equal to one-millionth of a meter (10‾⁶ m). It is the standard unit for measuring microscopic organisms in aquatic biology. To put this into perspective, 1 millimetre is equal to 1,000 micrometers. Although the term was previously referred to as a “micron,” the current international standard is the micrometer.
