Filter feeding is a biological method where an animal strains small food particles and nutrients directly from the surrounding water. Instead of hunting individual prey, these animals use specialised, comb-like body parts to separate food from large amounts of water.
This survival strategy is highly efficient. It allows animals to consume thousands of tiny organisms—like plankton and algae—in a single mouthful.
How Filter Feeding Works
The process relies on three basic steps across almost all species:

Water Intake: The animal draws water into its body, either by swimming forward or pumping water through specialised canals.

Filtration: The water passes through a biological mesh or filter. This mesh catches food particles while letting the water escape.

Aquatic Invertebrates: Species like oysters, clams, and sponges stay in one place and pump water through their bodies to filter out organic matter.

Ecosystem Engineers: Filter feeders act as natural water purifiers. For example, a single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day, clearing out excess algae and keeping marine ecosystems clear and healthy.
